With Super Bowl 50 behind us after a 24-10 Denver win over Carolina, over one million people already own “Denver Broncos Super Bowl Champions” gear. In order to be prepared for the high demand directly following the big game, retailers must pre-print thousands of products commemorating the winner of the big game. The challenge? The memorabilia must be printed before the winner is decided. That means that half the championship memorabilia for the Super Bowl is un-sellable.
So the question begs to be asked, what happens to all the pre-printed “Carolina Panthers Super Bowl Champions” gear?
For years, the losing team’s misprinted championship gear was destroyed, thrown away, and never seen again to prevent any incorrect merchandise from hitting the store shelves. Fortunately, not just for the NFL, but for all four major sport leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL), the league has changed their rules and started to donate the non-profitable gear about two decades ago.
For the past twenty years, the international humanitarian aid group World Vision has collected all the losing team’s “championship gear” and started spreading it to impoverished countries or areas of natural disaster.
However, after the 2015 Super Bowl, the NFL started working with Good360 to ship their misprinted gear. It is undetermined to where this year’s Panther Champions gear will end up. Once the Good360 factory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania receives its inventory, it will notify its offices worldwide of what is in stock. After that, the needed items will be distributed to different regions of the world. For example, sweatshirts will be sent to the colder countries, tee shirts and hats in warm and sunny countries, etc.
