A golf tournament can be one of the most enjoyable, exciting and eye-opening events put on by any business or charity. We all enjoy a leisurely route around the golf course, but when a competitive element is introduced things become a lot more fun for both players and spectators. But whether you’re holding a charity golf event or are simply giving players the opportunity to earn bragging rights, your golf tournament will take a lot of planning and hard work.
Here at Wearable Imaging we have worked with numerous clubs, providing custom printed merchandise for everything from staff uniforms to tournament gifts. Over the past few years we have learned a thing or two about the game, and we have put together a quick guide for planning your own golf tournament.
1. Pick Your Course
You will firstly want to choose the most appropriate golf course for the tournament. You will obviously need to ensure that the course is big enough for the number of players you hope will be attending, but there is plenty more to consider. Will you be holding a luncheon or award ceremony, and are there adequate facilities to do so? Can you afford to hire the course, on top of any costs for promotional gifts, advertising and other expenses?
You’ll also need to make a judgment on the venue staff. Remember that you will be working with them on a daily basis in the lead up to the event, so they must be friendly, knowledgeable, and prepared to assist you with your overall aims for the golf tournament.
2. Create a Flier or Brochure for the Event
You can then create a brochure or other advertising materials to attract potential players and sponsors. Be sure to also make a registration form available, either in the brochure or online. The player registration process is simple, but sponsors can require more work. Exactly where will the company logo appear? Will they be sponsoring the entire tournament or a single hole? Perhaps a hole in one or a raffle? You should also have your sponsors approve the size and placement of their logos on any materials beforehand, as the logo is arguably the most important aspect of a company’s marketing, and should be treated as such.
3. Decide on Promotional Products or Giveaways
One of the best ways to boost awareness of your golf tournament is to use promotional merchandise for giveaways, tee prizes and other tournament gifts during the event. Goodie bags can be filled with a number of custom personalized gifts, each with your golf tournament logo – or the logo of your main sponsor – imprinted on the side. Common gifts include golf balls, golf towels and lanyards, but wearable merchandise like polo shirts and hats are also a particular favorite for charity golf events.
4. Prepare with a Checklist
Last but not least, you’ll need to make sure that the big day itself runs smoothly. A checklist can help you to make sure that all staff are in place, catering has been organized, and all promotional gifts and giveaways are in place. With so many people in attendance and so many different tasks to get done, a checklist will save both stress and time on the day of the golf tournament.
Remember that things can also go wrong – players can drop out, the weather could take a turn for the worse, or you may have ordered too few imprinted promotional products. Sometimes these issues are simply out of our control, but the proper preparation well ahead of time will prevent any avoidable last-minute surprises.
