New York-based marketing company eMarketer recently published the results of their research into mobile ad spending. The New York-based marketing researchers found a surprising shift in many companies’ advertising budgets, revealing that mobile ad spending is expected to have increased by a huge 83% – to a total of $18 billion – by the end of the year 2014.
The latest statistics show that 90% of Americans currently own a cell phone, nearly two thirds of which are smartphones that allow the user to access Facebook, send emails and surf the internet. The same research found that 67% of American citizens check their phone without noticing a ringtone or vibrating alert, and that a surprising 29% consider their smartphones to be an item that they cannot live without.
And just how long are we spending on our cell phones each day? Research suggests that we use almost a quarter of our daily “media time” browsing our mobile devices – a total of two hours and 51 minutes every day, and approximately half an hour longer than in 2013.
$18 billion to be spent on mobile advertising in 2014
Our daily phone usage has been steadily increasing over the past few years, and the advertising dollars are now starting to follow suit. However, despite these impressive projections for 2014 we have yet to see an increase in advertising spending that is actually equivalent to today’s widespread use of cell phones. It is possible that marketers are not yet confident in the effectiveness of cell phones for advertising, although with these usage statistics and a steady increase in the development of new mobile ads, we are confident that mobile advertisements will continue to increase in the coming years.
Mobile ads are expected to comprise 9.8% of the total advertising market this year, totaling an impressive $18 billion. Newspaper advertisements are expected to account for expenses of $17 billion in 2014, despite the fact that only 2% of our media time is used reading them. Advertisers will spend another $15 billion on radio slots, leaving only television commercials and desktop computer advertising with a higher market stake than mobile ads.
