Well there you have it; what some consider to be the “greatest weekend of sports”, has come and gone, and now we are left with an unproductive weekend and a few near heart-attacks. Last weekend saw loads of thrilling March Madness action; as is always the case in the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Now, with just 15 games remaining until we can crown a champion, 16 teams await the Sweet 16 round to be played tonight.
Tournament action tipped off last Thursday with the Round of 64 games. Out of the 32 games played Thursday and Friday, an astonishing 20 of them were settled by 10 points or less! That breaks an NCAA Tournament record! It made for heart-stopping, nail-biting finishes and a lot of busted brackets.
Matter of fact, out of the 50 million Americans to fill out a bracket this year, none of them hold a perfect bracket. Let’s take a look at the top 5 most breathtaking games from the first weekend of play:
5. Dayton over Providence
Controversy surrounded Dayton’s win on Wednesday, as it became the first team since 1987 to play an NCAA Tournament game on its home floor. Then, to add fuel to the fire, the 11th-seeded Flyers practically played in front of a home crowd against the sixth-seeded Providence Friars.
Dayton took 30 free throws. Providence took just seven. Not saying the officiating favored Dayton, but those numbers are unusual.
In the end, Dayton’s home field advantage proved to be too much as last year’s Cinderella team proved that they may not be an underdog after-all. They won the game 66-53, upsetting the 6-seeded Providence.
4. UAB over Iowa State
William Lee scored the last four points for 14th-seeded UAB in its 60-59 upset win over Iowa State in the South Region Thursday.
The third-seeded Cyclones (25-9) couldn’t hold onto a 55-51 lead with 3:13 left as the Blazers outscored Iowa State 9-4 down the stretch of the first game of the NCAA Tournament.
3. NC State over Villanova
Missed opportunities, cold shooting from deep, and an energized Wolfpack team kept Villanova from advancing to the Sweet 16 as North Carolina State upset Villanova 71-68 on Saturday night.
Darrun Hilliard shot like his college career depended on it, hitting two 3-pointers in the final minute-plus to make it a 2-point game with 37 seconds remaining. NC State threw the ball away, but Dylan Ennis missed an open shot from deep. Hilliard nailed yet another dagger from deep to bring it down to one point with 1.4 seconds left.
Down three with the final shot, a desperation heave was not caught.
2. UCLA over SMU
Bryce Alford’s crazy 3-point shot in the final seconds was tipped beside the rim by SMU’s Yanick Moreira. Moreira was called for goaltending, much to the surprise of the Mustangs. SMU’s ensuing desperation shot came up short. This was possibly the most controversial moment of the tournament thus far. It was a disappointing, but exciting way to end an NCAA Tournament game.
1. Georgia State over Baylor
Georgia State made a miraculous comeback against Baylor, scoring 13-straight points to upset the third-seeded Bears, 57-56. With 2.5 seconds remaining, NBA hopeful R.J. Hunter delivered a deep three-pointer for the win.
Georgia State’s head coach and father of R.J., Ron Hunter, was caught falling out of his chair in excitement when his son made the shot. Ron Hunter suffered an Achilles injury while celebrating his team’s conference tournament championship victory.
