Due to advancing technology, the world we live in is changing fast. Societal norms are very different today than they were generations ago, but one thing still holds true: There are unwritten codes of business etiquette that will never change. Below are 5 tips to help you practice good business etiquette…
When in doubt, introduce others –
Introducing others is never a bad idea. Even if you are unsure if the two have met, odds are that they aren’t well acquainted and could use a refresher on names. When you help people grow their networks, they will usually return the favor and help you grow yours.
Don’t interrupt –
Sometimes silence is golden – especially when others are speaking. Let them finish their thought, and then add your two cents. It is respectful to respond to their complete thought rather than only the part that interests you.
Show genuine interest –
When did attention go out of style? If someone is speaking to you, give them your undivided attention. Nowadays it seems that everyone wants to talk and no one takes the time to truly listen. By being an attentive audience, you leave a BIG impression.
A handshake is still the professional standard in business etiquette –
Even if you’ve already connected with someone online, it is important to shake his or her hand when meeting face-to-face for the first time. A handshake shows that you value the opportunity to meet.
Watch your language –
This is important everywhere, but ESPECIALLY in the workplace. This rule doesn’t just apply to rude and derogatory language. Be careful when using slang as well because this can be seen as inappropriate depending on the environment.
There are plenty of other rules to go along with these so do your research before your next meeting! Practicing these simple tips will impress your team and make you look more professional.
