As the number of workplace accidents is on the rise many companies are looking for new ways to increase the level of workplace safety for their employees.
1. Create Awareness
One of the best ways to ensure a safe workplace is to foster a culture of awareness. By instituting new policies designed to keep safety managers and employees on the same page, you can diminish the chance of accidents or injuries. Don’t rush between workstations or during times where accidents are likely to occur.
2. Involve Employees
While creating a culture of safety within a company is easier said than done, there are a few tips that are useful when looking to improve the safety of a workplace. Involving employees in safety activities and drills is one of the best ways to increase overall safety standards in any company. While they may have seemed silly to us as kids, fire drills played an important role in training us how to act safely in an unsafe environment. Similar drills can be used in the corporate environment to great effect.
3. Offer Incentives
Another option to help bolster the safety culture of a company is to offer incentives to those employees and managers who go above and beyond in the name of safety. Offering managers a small bonus, extra vacation time or other special perks can do wonders to the psychology of a department.
Additionally, timed incentives can be a great alternative to increase workplace safety. Attaching incentives to annually, quarterly or monthly safety milestones can help to improve safety throughout a department. High end jackets, watches and awards are all common rewards for employees who manage to go incident free for a year or longer.
4. Provide Proper Safety Equipment
Providing employees with up-to-date safety equipment is also an effective way to create a safer working environment. Replacing dirty and scratched safety glasses with new adjustable ANSI safety glasses will not only allow an employee to do his/her job more effectively, but safer as well. If working in an environment where visibility is low, outfitting workers with high visibility shirts or Class 2 high visibility safety vest can reduce accidents.
In the event of an accident, it is important that your safety managers be properly trained in how to handle any kind of emergency situation. A properly stocked first-aid kit is essential to any workplace, even if you feel as though there are no safety hazards.
Hopefully you can apply a few of these tips to help increase the overall level of safety in your company or workplace.
